The prime minister reiterated his call of debt relief for the developing countries on Wednesday. Prime Minister Imran khan believes that this step is necessary in order to deal with the current economic challenges as well as the overwhelmed healthcare system. The prime minster spoke to through the Covid Action Platform of the World Economic Forum through a video link. He said that the debt relief is crucial as Pakistan and many other developing countries require fiscal space in order to divert their resources to the healthcare system, while lowering down the drastic impacts of the Covid lockdown.
The PM mentioned that the G-20 states had already prepared a debt relief policy for the developing countries and in that respect had held a telephonic discussion. These talks were done with the leaders of Ethiopia, Nigeria and Egypt. These are some of the many countries facing economic crises at the moment.
The PM elaborated that our country was facing twin-challenge of fighting with the virus along with unemployment of around 25Mn daily or weekly-wage workers because of the lockdown. The PM said that that a total of 120 – 150 million people were affected due to the covid-19 lockdown. As PM mentioned, the G-20 states already have come up with a debt-relief policy for the developing countries so we should also create a balance for our people so that not only they can earn their wages but also stay safe from the deadly virus.
The PM stated that without going to work the daily and weekly wagers cannot feed their families. He mentioned registration of one million youth in the volunteer Corona Relief Tiger Force in Pakistan and that also about the already over-burdened administration being helped by volunteers. The PM said that he is positive about the fact that Pakistan has already geared up to fight with the Covid-19 challenges.
